Hey Everyone, Hal Tenny here! I hope you're not tired of GOTG V2 news yet.
With all the recent films that include fractal elements, fractals are finally getting a bit more exposure, which can only be good news for all of us. "Doctor Strange", "Suicide Squad" and the soon to be released "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" (just to mention a few) all have fractal elements in them. And GOTG V2 specifically has Mandelbulb 3D imagery. There's still a lot I can't say about what I know as far as Guardians goes, but I think it's safe to give a little more info about my involvement.
I submitted over 300 images to the art department, and somewhere around 25 OBJ models, all made the old way from voxel slices. As far as I know, none of the models were used, but it gave them some perspective on what could be done with MB3D. Many of the 300 images I sent were simply variations of each other based on 10 or 12 themes or styles. Most were based on mandelbulb imagery of mine that they had found posted online here at deviantArt, as well as other places.
They also asked if I could send some concepts for a few specific ideas they were chasing. And some of those concepts I sent ended up being key to getting them moving forward with something new and unique that would fulfill the vision they were looking for. Of course, some of the things I sent their way were not helpful at all. So in all actuality, it is a small portion of the 300 images that were ultimately used.
I also sent parameters for 10 or 12 images to 4 different professional visual effects companies so they could create 3d models. That brings me to another point I wanted to make clear as well. All the work I sent went through several more stages of development as well as other conceptual artists to get the final results you'll see in the film. They deserve a good share of the credit for making my imagery look good!
I am humbled by the great response and support from everyone in the fractal community. I've been fortunate to have a great deal of time to invest in my work. And fortunate to have the opportunity to work on such a huge project as the Marvel film. And with that, below is some more mandelbulb 3D imagery brought to life in screen grabs and photos I've found online from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol2~
The above image shows a couple of fractal elements in physical form, actually constructed on a set!
This image above also shows some 'fractalized' set pieces~
The above image is one of the first concept images released quite some time ago that shows some fractal elements in the background. It's the first publicly shown image that I saw that shows a little piece of my fractal work.
The above image shows Rocket and baby Groot in a tunnel or cavern that looks to be entirely constructed from fractal imagery~
This image above is one of the first screen captures I found from the first teaser trailer that clearly shows some Mandelbulb 3D fractal work.
The image above shows a structure that was constructed from many different parts of fractal images I submitted. Again, I can't give the professional concept artists enough credit for how good they made the fractal concepts look!
The above image shows some kind of creature or structure that is obviously (at least partially) fractal based. I'm not sure exactly what it is! lol
And last one above, a shot of the whole crew in the tunnel/cavern that appears to be entirely fractal based~
Now we have to just sit back and wait for the film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol2 will be out in theaters May 5, 2017, only 2 more months~
Thanks everyone!

New Official Mandelbulb3d Site!
Update from Andreas Maschke (thargor6 (https://www.deviantart.com/thargor6)) today! Here is what he had to say:
"I just finished and published the first version of the new official Mandelbulb3D-site.
It is a subdomain of my main domain, so it uses a fast and secure web space:"

Big thanks to Andreas for continuing to support this amazing program!

MB3D v1.99.7 release with BulbTracer2
Great news from Andreas ~thargor6 (https://www.deviantart.com/thargor6)
Just released MB3D 1.99.7 as a major update.
:thumb816342442:
It comes with BTracer2, a major update to the mesh-generator.
In fact, the module was rewritten, in order to achieve the following goals:
– get much better results
– to be much faster
– (optionally) generate color-information
– make it simpler to use
In short: to make it fun! :D
See the included image “BulbTracer2.jpg” for a visual overview of the changes. Have fun!

MB3D 1.98 release: point-cloud export
News from Andreas;
http://www.andreas-maschke.com/?p=5051
"What’s new:
– Point-Cloud-export in the BulbTracer-module, which is able to generate very nice models in high resolution in a short time,
even with color (which is currently a limited feature).
This mode is now the default mode in the BulbTracer, with a initial volumetric resolution of 256, which is nice to play around,
because it is not too slow, but often creates nice models.
For creating a final mesh, a volumetric resolution of 2560 is not unusual, as the new mode is fast and takes not too much memory.
To use the old way of generating mesh consiting of vertices and f
Mandelbulb 3D ~ Light it up!
This journal is really not so much a tutorial as it is a workflow discussion on final composing and lighting of a Mandelbulb 3D scene. And I realize there will always be a difference of opinion on something being too dark, too bright, too foggy or just too much something in one way or the other. But to me, that's what can make the difference between a regular image, and one that really sets a mood and has more impact than a plain vanilla piece. So below I cover my thought process on a recent image I posted. Maybe this journal will encourage you to look for that little something extra that can make a difference in your final results.
